Starting at the Village and working up the Mountain Road
Harrison's - In the village. Great, small restaurant and bar located in a basement on
Main Street at the corner, and at the beginning of the mountain road.
Lunch and Dinner. Owner is Kathy. 802-253-7773 http://www.harrisonsstowe.com
Frida's Taqueria and Grill In the village. This is a Mexican restaurant which recently took over the beloved Swiss Pot Restaurant which went out of business. It is very popular, and if you want Mexican food, it is about the only game in town. But we found it very noisy, especially in the little front room closest to Main Street. If you go, pick you seat carefully. http://www.fridastaqueria.com/
The Whip at The Green Mountain Inn. In the village. Not our normal favorite, in
part because of hotel/inn atmosphere, but a very nice restaurant in basement
adjacent to bar. Definitely the best place for Sunday Brunch, but
excellent for evening dining as well 802-253-7302 http://www.greenmountaininn.com/thewhip.html
The Malt Shop - In the village. Best and only ice cream shop in Stowe (there
are only two other than Ben and Jerry's which is 15 min away in Waterbury),
plus good restaurant for hamburgers, etc. Kids love this place.
Open til 9:00 p.m. at least on week ends in the summer. In summer can
also eat outdoors on Patio. As you come into Stowe on Route 100, take
first right one block after Green Mountain Inn on Depot Street. The Malt Shop is down
about a block and a half on the left, on the corner, just before you get to the
Post Office. Owner is Rachel. http://www.yelp.com/biz/depot-street-malt-shoppe-stowe http://www.flickr.com/photos/louisahennessy/3625165380/
Santos Cocina Latina Brand New (12/09)
Latin restaurant, about two blocks up the Mountain Road from the Village, up on
the hill on the left.Getting rave
reviews. We haven't tried it yet.On our todo list.Their web site, the first link below, is not active
at this writing. If it does not work, try
the second link. 802-253-3110
McCarthy's - A local favorite, and one of ours - breakfast and lunch -
lots of town atmosphere - Irish owner, Diane, and several Irish
waitresses.Pancakes, waffles, you name
it.

Stonybrook
Neighborhood Locally known as "The Little Village"
The Blue Donkey -
Burgers on Boards.A walk, somewhat
long walk, from the condo. This place started out as a takeout-only burger
shack in the summer of 2009.It was launched
by some locals who teamed with the owners of an Upper West Side NYC restaurant
of the same name.Been a spectacular
success, and by December 2009 they had plans to complete an add-on building for
sit downs. If you want a great, quick
hamburger near the condo, this is it! And try their curly fries!
The ShedA walk from the condo. For some reason not one of our favorites, although a popular place.Good for hamburgers and general fare. This link will give you a good sense of the
ambience.
PieCasso Pizza - Even closer to Stonybrook - Excellent for takeout
or sit down. Besides their great pizzas, whole or by the slice, you must also try their fabulous Caesar Salads and their Garlic Nuts (a garlic loaded cinnamon roll without the cinnamon!) http://www.piecasso.com/piecasso2009/
Stowe Dogs - Great hot dog place across the Mountain Road from PieCasso in the small Gale Farm Shopping Center. Local culture par exellence! Pictures of local town dogs adorn the walls. Our black Gordon Setter is there. See if you can find it. Title is Best Stowe Dog! Caters especially to Vermont College kids, but generally to all hot dog lovers, young and old.
Trapp Family Lodge - Take a left out of the Condo driveway onto
Luce Hill Rd. and go straight up the hill. Don't take the first left on
Barrows Rd, but go on up the hill taking your next left a half mile or so
further up. We used to prefer the Lodge's Austrian Tea Room which was a
separate building about a half mile beforehe lodge. But that is now
(Winter 08/09) being renovated and converted to a deli, so not sure what to
expect. The lodge itself is worth a stop-by as tourist visit. And
you can look over their lodge dining facilities yourself to see if it would fit
with your plans.
Edelweiss - This is actually a deli and not a
restaurant, 5 min walk from the Condo. Go Down Luce Hill Rd and turn
left on the Mountain Road - about 1/4 mi up on the left. Great baked goods - especially their Apple
Pies. Takeout sandwiches and wraps also good.
Stowe Video. Not a restaurant but in case you want to watch a vidwo after dinner this video rental shop is very close to Stonybrook, in
the little Gale Farm Center Mall across the street from the Piecasso Pizza
Restaurant. 253-7115
Further up the Mountain Road
Gracies - Hamburgers a specialty - about a mile or two up the Mountain Road from
Stonybrook, at the intersection of the Mountain Road and Edson Hill Road.
Trattoria La Festa - Furthest up the Mountain Road but worth the trip. Great
Italian food, owned by two fun, Italian brothers, Tony and Giancarlo.

More Expensive Restaurants
Hen of the Wood - Waterbury. For expensive fare, we used to prefer
Michaels, then the Solstice opened at the new Luxury Mountain Lodge, and that
moved into first place. Belatedly we discovered Hen of the Wood, in Waterbury, just off Route
100, near the Mobil Station at the Route 89 exit. Very Vermonty, in an
old Mill over looking a waterfall. Clearly the No. 1. Will cost
$100 for 2, without wine. It has had a rave New York Times
review. Hen of the Wood is actually the name of a mushroom, which
they serve grilled as an appetizer. Fabulous. Google it.802-244-7300 http://www.henofthewood.com/index.html
(not as formal as their home page - no tablecloths) http://travel.nytimes.com/2008/12/28/travel/28choice.html
New York Times Review
Solstice Restaurant at the all new StoweMountain
Lodge - This is a 5-Star Lodge that is a real class act. Everything
inside, marble floors, wood walls, columns, etc., all from Vermont. The Solstice menu (expensive)
is also all from Vermont
foods. 802-760-4735 http://www.stowemountainlodge.com/stowe-vermont-dining.php
Michael's On the Hill - Now going South from Stowe. About 5-6
miles back down Route 100 toward Waterbury.
This is the farthest of our recommendations from Stonybrook, and was our
favorite for expensive dining, until the Solstice Restaurant opened at the
Mountain. Still, a good option.

Montpelier Restaurants
Brunch at J. Morgans at Capitol Plaza Hotel. Good meal here
anytime, with great bar-like atmosphere in one room, with separate adjoining
dining room. Both rooms have large model trains running around tracks
near the ceiling. An extensive buffet Sunday Brunch is $14.95 - a
bargain 802-223-5222

Main Street Grill - Reasonably priced but great high-end dining by
restaurant with chefs from the New England Culinary Institute (NECI).
Also a good, and more delicate Sunday Brunch spot. Located at 118 Main St.
